Lilies for motherhood, cinquefoil for motherly affection, and gillyflower for bonds of affection. For the one who stepped into the role, who mothers by choice. For any mother figure whose connection to you was built upon love.
Floriography, or the "language of flowers," is a tradition where specific flowers and flower arrangements are used to convey emotions and messages. Many cultures across the globe give meaning to the flowers they grow and share.
In 19th century Victorian society, a soaring interest in botany and expectations of restrained and proper behaviour cultivated the perfect opportunity for floriography to grow in popularity. Armed with a bouquet of flowers coded with secret meanings, a suitor could express affection without uttering a single word.
These illustrations are inspired by the Victorian language of flowers.
