Floriography, or the "language of flowers," is a tradition where specific flowers and flower arrangements are used to convey emotions and messages. Many cultures across the globe give meaning to the flowers they grow and share.

In 19th century Victorian society, a soaring interest in botany and expectations of restrained and proper behaviour cultivated the perfect opportunity for floriography to grow in popularity. Armed with a bouquet of flowers coded with secret meanings, a suitor could express affection without uttering a single word.

These illustrations are inspired by the Victorian language of flowers.
